The Baptism In The Holy Spirit

John the Baptist had two things to say about Jesus:

1) He is "The Lamb of God Who takes away the sins of the world." (John 1:29); and

2) John also said, "As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (Matthew 3:11)

Once a person believes in Jesus, he or she is qualified to receive the Holy Spirit (the world cannot receive Him, only Christians can!)

Many Christians are taught that they received the Holy Spirit when they believed based on 1 Corinthians 12:13: "For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit." But this is an erroneous translation of the Greek, which literally says, "For also in one Spirit we all into one body were baptized, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bondmen or free, and all into one Spirit were watered." The Greek verb potizo, which I have translated "watered" is always translated in other places as "to give a drink" or "to water". NEW AMERICAN STANDARD EXHAUSTIVE CONCORDANCE. The point is (as the old saying goes), you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink! Likewise, God can give the Holy Spirit to every Christian, but He does not make us drink. It's not automatic! See Acts 8:4-17, Acts 9:17, Acts 19:1-7. He gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask for Him (Luke 11:13)

I suggest this prayer:

"Lord Jesus, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit so that I will have the power to live for You and serve You all the days of my life. Please also show me anything in my life that hinders me from being a clear channel for You to use to reach out and touch others. Father, please forgive me for any dealings I have had with evil spirits through the use of occult materials or occult practices. I confess these things as abominations to You, and ask that You would cleanse me anew with the Blood of Jesus Your Son so that I can be a holy vessel for Your use. Thank You, Father, for Your grace and mercy to me in Christ Jesus my Lord! Amen."

You may need the laying on of hands by other believers, or you may need to renounce occult practices or other abominations before you can receive the Holy Spirit.

You will find the baptism in the Holy Spirit to be nearly as significant in your life as receiving Jesus in the first place.

Please let me know how you are doing. I care about you because God cares about you!

The keys to growing in the Spirit are humility, love, and faith that God is true, that what He says in the Scriptures is true, and that He is able to protect you from receiving any other spirit but His Holy Spirit when you ask Him to baptize you in His Spirit. I trust that you will find that the Scriptures will come more alive to you since the author of the Scriptures is now in you! You will be able to minister to others in the same Spirit that Jesus ministered while He was walking the earth!

Holy Father, thank You for all that You have freely given to us through Your Son, Jesus! Please lead us into all the truth that we need to be set completely free to be Your servants. Please show us how to completely abide in Jesus, the True Vine, so that we may be abundantly fruitful for Your kingdom. Please help us to change our minds about anything which we are mistaken about, and to turn from any behavior which is not pleasing to You. Please pour out times of refreshing on all of Your people now so that we may be fully refreshed to fellowship with You and Your people. All this I ask, and a special blessing on the person reading this, in Your name, Lord Jesus, amen!

A lot of trouble has been caused by people who insist that the spiritual gift of speaking in tongues is the 'sign' of the baptism in the holy Spirit.  You will find that in three of the five times that people were baptized in the Holy Spirit in the Acts of the Apostles that they specifically spoke in tongues.  That does not make speaking in tongues 'the sign', especially when one considers the fact that Jesus said that we would receive power [Greek:  'dunamis' - ability] when the Holy Spirit came upon us.  60% is not 100%!!

You will find a happier and more full relationship with the Holy Spirit if you simply offer yourself as a vessel for Him to use to minister to God and to others. He will distribute to you whatever gifts He deems appropriate to any particular situation.

Heb 13:20-21  Now may the God of Peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the Great Shepherd of the Sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to Whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
